Walk-in Assistance

The Sales Tax Division is located in the Finance Department at Westminster City Hall, 4800 W. 92nd Ave. Sales tax staff is always available during the city's regular business hours. City Hall offices are open Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. City Hall is closed on Friday. You may also call the Sales Tax Division at 303-658-2065, during these same hours for help over the phone.

If you have technical questions about Westminster taxes, we recommend phoning before you drop by to ensure that an auditor will be available.

Business Registration & Licensing

Every person engaged in business in Westminster must obtain the appropriate license. Even non-profits and businesses that do not make taxable sales must obtain a city license. The licensing procedure insures that the city has current emergency notification information and that the area is properly zoned for a particular activity. There is no fee for general licenses. Registration forms may be obtained from the Registration & Licensing page or by calling the City Clerk's office at 303-658-2162.

Audits

As part of a comprehensive tax compliance program, the Sales Tax Division conducts routine audits of taxpayers to determine compliance with the Westminster Municipal Code. The purpose of the audit is to determine whether the correct amount of tax has been reported and paid by the taxpayer. The city selects a diverse group of taxpayers for audit based upon a number of factors. Selection for audit is not an indication that a taxpayer has made an error. If your business is selected for audit you will be notified in writing and will be given detailed instructions about the audit process.

Collections & Enforcement

The city's revenue agent handles the collection of delinquent Westminster taxes. An official notice is sent to all taxpayers who become delinquent. If the taxpayer does not respond, the revenue agent may take action to collect the tax. These actions may include a summons to municipal court, filing of tax liens against property or, in extreme cases, seizure and sale of business property.

Penalties and interest is assessed on all delinquent tax. It is important to contact the Sales Tax Division immediately if your business receives a notice of assessment.

Confidentiality

All financial information that businesses provide to the Sales Tax Division is kept confidential. For this reason, we may not be able to release certain information over the phone. For example, the amount of sales reported by a business may only be released to an agent of that business with proper identification.
