Michele Haney - Council candidate

Name: Michele Haney

Occupation: President, Red Rocks Community College

Past elected offices: none

Other leadership positions & community involvement: I have been a resident of Westminster since 1993 and have served on the city’s Park and Recreation Board and the Inclusivity Task Force.  I am a current member and past president of Community Reach and serve on the Board of Directors for Jefferson County Economic Development.  I was voted “Woman of the Year” by the City of Westminster as a result of the College Hill Library collaboration between the City and Front Range Community College.  I also served on many national boards dealing with higher education.

  1. Why are you the most qualified person for this office? I grew up as a military brat, traveling and living across the world both in Asia and Europe.  As a result, these experiences have contributed to my being able to deal with change and has fostered a passion in me for meeting and working with people of all backgrounds. I listen and I communicate and I believe in transparency in government.  I believe that local government needs to be accountable and accessible.
  2. What is the most important issue facing Westminster and how will you address it? There are many.  Our city is growing.  Development is going to continue, but we must be thoughtful about it.  The city should focus on encouraging affordable and attainable for sale housing while protecting the character of our established neighborhoods and making sure development fits the needs of people who already live here.
  3. What do you think the city does well and where do you see room for improvement? I think the city has done a good job of collaborating with our neighboring communities and that must continue.  Westminster is not an island and we are dealing with the same challenges other cities are facing, including homelessness, mental health, housing and public safety.  We need to come together to find common ground and solutions to these issues.
  4. What is your favorite thing about living in Westminster? Our citizens.  They are truly why I want to serve.
