Growing Home partners with city staff to help with food distribution

Growing Home partners with city staff to help with food distribution

On the Monday after Gov. Jared Polis announced a statewide Stay-at-Home order, Karen Fox Elwell, president and CEO of Growing Home in Westminster, walked into the food pantry and saw a lot of empty shelves.

“I thought, ‘We’ll be lucky to make it through the week,’” Elwell said.

However, Food Bank of the Rockies listed Growing Home as an essential partner that would continue to receive food throughout the pandemic. A problem remained, though: How to receive and distribute it?

A solution lay in community partnerships, including with the City of Westminster. Since the Stay-at-Home order was issued, a team of nine city Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department employees has fulfilled duties ranging from onsite logistics for food disbursement, food delivery from the Denver Food Bank of the Rockies location to Growing Home and helping with overall coordination.

“Access to food is a critical need with a strong link to quality of life and homelessness,” explained Parks, Recreation and Libraries Director Jason Genck. “Supporting quality of life and addressing homelessness in our community continue to be important goals for the city.”

Westminster Senior Management Analyst Kate Skarbek worked with Growing Home to help address new and expanding challenges in the city. This led to Growing Home agreeing to expand their services beyond their core mission of serving families to offer assistance to all populations.

The city also opened the MAC recreation center for cold food storage, since Growing Home does not have the capacity for it.

Parks, Recreation and Libraries staff who have pivoted from their normal duties to working with Growing Home have fulfilled tasks from moving 5,000-pound loads of food to helping set up cones and greeting Growing Home guests.

“City staff and volunteers from areas throughout Westminster have joined to support the added challenges presented to Growing Home, to help make sure we can meet the demand for food during the COVID-19 crisis,” Genck said

The collaboration between the city and Growing Home now also includes a food garden that is currently being constructed at Irving Street Park adjacent to the library. The project is supported through grant funding that Growing Home secured through the Park, Recreation, Libraries and Open Space Board’s grant program.

“Having lost its main garden recently, Growing Home will provide produce from this garden to those dealing with food insecurity,” Genck said.

Growing Home strengthens families, nurtures children and connects the community by filling a critical gap for families and children who are experiencing immediate and long-term barriers to stability and success. They are currently focused on food pantry operations. If you would like to donate, here’s more information. If you or someone you know are in need of their services, they are located at 3489 West 72nd Ave. and the food pantry is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon.
