Police Department staff earn top awards at recent conference

The Colorado NENA/APCO (National Emergency Number Association/Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials) annual conference was held April 3-5, at the Marriott Hotel in Westminster.  At the awards luncheon, two distinguished awards were presented to communications staff members in the Police Department.

Technical Services Coordinator Nelson Martinez received the Radio Frequency Technologist of the Year award for his outstanding service overall as well as the significant amount of work he did to rewire the entire dispatch center in preparation for new consoles, monitors and related equipment. He was also instrumental in the implementation of a new telephony system in 2018.

Those two major projects were in addition to all of Martinez’s regular duties, including mobile data terminals and over 710 radios for the Police, Fire, Public Works and Utilities, and the Parks, Recreation and Libraries Departments.

Five city dispatchers took home the “gold” as Team of the Year for their work during the Children’s Dentistry Shooting. The dispatchers handled the initial incoming wave of phone calls and radio transmissions that ensued immediately following the first shot that was fired in this senseless act of violence.

Chaos doesn’t begin to describe these types of events.  The team remained calm, provided emergency medical dispatching instructions for victims, ascertained and relayed suspect information, dispatched 20 officers and eventually managed over 70 law enforcement officials and 10 fire units on the scene. Simultaneously, they were able to process requests being made of them from over their shoulder, over the radio and by telephone. This was definitely a well-deserved award.

Congratulations to city public safety staff for their hard work managing and coordinating our police officers, fire fighters and emergency medical services employees.
