Scam Phone Calls

Date – January 25, 2020

Today we have been notified by several residents that someone is calling and claiming to be Sergeant Brandon Garcia or Captain Steve Smithers with the Westminster Police Department, even going as far as providing inaccurate badge numbers. The Westminster Police Department will never call and ask you for money.  These scammers are calling from the number 303-658-4300, which is a Westminster City number, and stating you have missed a court date. They are asking you to return a call to 720 845 7491, which is not a city number.  The voicemail on this number states you have reached Sergeant Brandon Garcia, Westminster Police Department does not have a Sergeant Brandon Garcia or Captain Steve Smithers who are employed by the city.

If you actually reach a person on this number they will tell you they will connect you with a national database to make payment on a warrant. When the transfer occurs they are asking for your name, date of birth and social security number. Please do not give them any of this information, in fact do not answer calls from either of these numbers if you receive them.

If you have questions about the legitimacy of a phone call or the identity of an officer you can contact the Westminster Police Department 303-658-4360. Do not be afraid to hang up on these people if you answer the call and contact the police department.

Broomfield Police Department was also experiencing the same type of scam calls yesterday. Continue to remain vigilant and contact your local police department with any questions.
