Sign Code Update gets underway

During the week of June 11-14, the City of Westminster’s Sign Code Update project officially got under way. The city’s Sign Code Update steering committee (city staff from the Planning Division and the Economic Development Department), was introduced to consultants hired to develop the new code (White & Smith LLC, Winter & Company, and Kendig Keast Collaborative). The group laid out a basic timeline, discussed some of the parameters and constraints that govern the project, updated everyone with a “where the city stands now” snapshot and identified the next efforts to be undertaken and completed.

Until approximately the end of October, the project is in a “collect input and data” mode. The consultants are beginning the overall research effort, and the consultants and steering committee are working on creating a Visual Preference Survey.

The goal is to reach out to those that interact with and use signs - developers, property owners and management companies, local businesses, citizens, civic leaders, business organizations, sign manufacturers and others - and get their feedback on the current Sign Code and how it should be updated or corrected, from their point of view.

The steering committee and consultant team is planning an open house/workshop event on Wednesday, July 18, from 5-7 p.m. at City Hall (Multi-purpose Room), 4800 W. 92nd Ave.

On Tuesday, July 17, and Wednesday, July 18, the first of many stakeholder interviews will be held. These interviews provide interested parties and stakeholders in the city’s process with a more focused opportunity to connect with the steering committee and the consultants, and to provide their thoughts and opinions regarding the new Sign Code.
