Sheridan Blvd Water Line Replacement

What’s Happening Now:

Work starting as early as the week of June 20, 2022

We are gearing up for construction to begin as early as the week of June 20. We will begin our work between 73rd and 76th Avenue. This work is anticipated to last in this area for a couple of months. Crews will be working primarily in the center of Sheridan Boulevard where we will be installing our new water line. North and southbound travel will be maintained throughout the project.

Expect to see crews:

  • Laying out traffic control and temporarily adjusting travel lanes
  • Locating utilities and digging holes
  • Saw cutting asphalt and beginning roadway removal
  • Beginning to lay new water line pipe on Sheridan Boulevard

We will provide you with regular updates on how the project may impact you, your neighbors, and nearby businesses. The best ways to stay in touch are to sign up for our email listserv. We will send listservs as needed for traffic changes, impacts, project updates, and schedule updates.

Project Overview:

The Sheridan Water Line Replacement Project addresses concerns of age, condition, and capacity of the current water Line along Sheridan Blvd between 72nd and 80th Avenue. Replacing the pipe will greatly reduce the potential for a watermain break and ensures South Westminster residents along the Sheridan corridor will have better and more reliable water service. We plan to dig up the 1960’s-year-old water main and install a new watermain this year. We know this may cause some potential traffic delays along with construction noise, and we will do all that we can to minimize the inconvenience to your community. When complete, the project will repave parts of Sheridan Boulevard and add fresh striping, supporting a smooth and safe driving experience.

This project is the second phase of a larger vision to modernize the water infrastructure along the Sheridan corridor. In 2016 we completed the first phase of the water line from 80th to 88th Avenue, and we anticipate replacing the water line all the way to 120th Avenue in the future.

What to expect during construction:

The Sheridan Water Line Replacement Project will be working throughout the roadway and shoulder as needed. We understand that construction can be noisy and inconvenient, and want to make sure you — especially those that live, work, and travel along Sheridan Blvd — know what to expect as this work continues into 2023.

Generally, we anticipate construction work to occur on weekdays between 7 A.M. and 7 P.M. Construction impacts may include:

  • Periodic traffic or pedestrian detours. When traffic detours occur, we will have flaggers to help direct vehicle traffic.
  • Vehicle lane shifts around the work zone
  • Partial closures of minor intersections. When this happens, we will provide advance notice.
  • Roadway removal and excavation

We will need to demolish part of Sheridan Boulevard to access the water line below. The majority of this work will take place between 73rd to 80th Avenue.

Removals typically include:

  • Breaking and jackhammering the existing pavement or concrete
  • Excavating the broken debris
  • Carrying away the debris
  • Vibrations nearby as we break up the cement or asphalt
  • Loud noises
  • Truck traffic to help carry out road debris
  • Work to typically happen from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M.

What to Expect:

  • Vibrations nearby as we break up the cement or asphalt
  • Loud noises
  • Truck traffic to help carry out road debris
  • Work to typically happen from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M.

We are upgrading our 12” water line to a 16” water line.

What to expect:

  • Excavation and drilling to install pipes from 6'-22' underneath roadway depending on the pipe’s location.
  • Multiple temporary water shut-offs in multiple locations. You will be notified in advance of any shutoffs. Shut-offs will not be allowed for critical facilities such as: Westminster Care Center, Kaiser, and San Marino.
  • Loud noise, dust, and vibrations
  • Truck traffic
  • Typical work hours from 7 AM to 7 PM
  • Temporary parking restrictions for weeks at a time

Upon completing our pipe upgrades, we will make Sheridan just like new. We will repave and restripe it to ensure a smooth ride through the work zone. Paving is extremely weather dependent and requires ground temperatures to be above 50 degrees.

What to expect:

  • You may not be able to temporarily go in or out of driveways or parking lots when the road is closed and paving is in process
  • To ensure we minimize impacting traffic flow, we may repave at night or occasionally work at night or weekends.
  • Temporary parking restrictions
  • Expect noise, tar-like odors, and large equipment
  • Fresh pavement is hot, oily, and extremely sticky. Please keep off new pavement if you are walking, especially with dogs, as the oil and pavement can harm their feet and be difficult to remove from fur.
  • Fire, Police, and EMS vehicles will be provided access at all times.
  • If you have accessibility concerns or concerns about nighttime paving, please contact us right away at constructionoutreach@cityofwestminster.us.
