Interlibrary Loan

Didn't find what you were looking for?

Any patron of the Westminster Public Library can request an item the library does not own. After a request is made, our Collection Development Librarian will determine whether to purchase the item for the library collection, or borrow it from another library (Interlibrary Loan). You can expect requests to take 2-4 weeks to be filled. You will be notified when your item arrives by automated phone call and/or email, depending on the method of notification preference in your library account.

How do I request an item?

Check the Westminster Public Library catalog to make sure we do not already own what you want. If not, you can complete the appropriate form below, or make a request over the phone (303-658-2603, College Hill or 303-658-2303, Irving Street) or visit the library in person to place a request.

  • If your request is for a book, audio, film or music CD, complete this request form.
  • If your request is for a magazine or journal article, complete this form.

Interlibrary Loan

Is there a charge for borrowing Interlibrary Loan materials?

In most cases, the Westminster Public Library pays the costs for this service. Occasionally, with hard-to-obtain items, the lending library may charge a fee, payable by the patron. Average costs in such instances are $15-$20. You will always be given the option to refuse these charges before any request is filled. The library always tries to borrow items for free if possible.

How long does it take to get an item through Interlibrary Loan?

You should expect your request to take 2-3 weeks to be filled. Items available locally will obviously arrive much sooner than items coming from out-of-state. Requests are handled as they are received and are generally processed within 24 hours.

What if I don't hear from you?

Shortly after you make a request, library staff will add a hold to your patron record for the item requested. When the item arrives, you will be notified by automated phone call and/or email, depending on the method of notification preference in your library account. You may pick up your item from either the self-service hold shelf at College Hill or the Customer Service Desk at Irving Street, as specified on your request. Items will be held for one week. If you would like to speak to Interlibrary Loan staff, call 303-658-2636.

However, in some instances, the item may not be available. If your request cannot be filled, a message will be placed on your patron record. Messages can be viewed by choosing the 'My Account' tab on the catalog home page, logging in with your library barcode and PIN, and then selecting the 'Additional Information' tab.

Is there a limit on how many items I can request through Interlibrary Loan?

At this time we ask that you request no more than five items. After your five items have been returned to the lending library, you can request additional items.
