Summer Lunch Program provides free lunches to kids and teens

The City of Westminster’s Parks, Recreation and Libraries Department, in partnership with Westminster Public Schools, will offer its popular free Summer Lunch Program at four city facilities:

  • Swim & Fitness Center (3290 W. 76th Ave.)
  • Countryside Pool (10470 Oak St.)
  • City Park Recreation Center (10455 Sheridan Blvd.)
  • Westminster Center Park (4801 W. 92nd Ave.).

The program provides free, USDA-approved lunches to children and youth ages 18 years and under from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday between May 28 and Aug. 2.

Adults 19 years of age and older can also participate by purchasing a lunch for only $3.50.

The city is also offering a free Never Play Hungry program in conjunction with the Summer Lunch Program to encourage all children to eat healthy as they stay active.

Youth and their families are encouraged to enjoy family activities, crafts, games and more before and after lunch.

Never Play Hungry is currently offered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday-Friday between May 28 and Aug. 2 at two city facilities:

  • Countryside Outdoor Pool (10470 Oak St.)
  • Westminster Center Park (4801 92nd Ave.).

The Summer Lunch Program was first launched in 2015 at a single location—the Swim & Fitness Center. When the program first started, approximately 20 children participated; however, that number quickly grew to around 70 children a day, with a final year-end tally of 2,500 meals served.

This year, the program aims to serve more than 20,000 lunches. A typical lunch includes a sandwich, veggie sticks, a cookie and a serving of milk. Hot lunches are also available on a frequent basis.
