Household Water Bill Impact

Leelo en español abajo.

There is no set increase in water bills for a household. Rather, any bill increases will be tied to each individual household's water.

Customer water use is charged by tiers in Westminster.

  • The 1st tier is for indoor water use, such as drinking water, showering, cooking and cleaning, and is charged at the cheapest rate.
  • The 2nd and 3rd tiers are for more discretionary water use, such as outdoor irrigation, and are charged at more expensive rates.

The city has calculated the impacts on the average customer in three categories – low, average and high water use. The low and average categories account for more than 85 percent of all households in Westminster.

NOTE: The following are just examples based on the average use we see in the system. Each household would see a different impact based on their actual water use.

Low water user (10.1 percent of households in Westminster)
For a single-occupancy home with a small yard, the average increase will be about $5 per month for 2020.

Average water user (77.6 percent of households in Westminster)
For a family of three with a normal-sized yard, the average increase will be about $11.50 per month for 2020.

High water user (12.3 percent of households in Westminster)
For a large household that irrigates an acre of grass and landscaping (annual water and sewer bill already averages more than $200 per month), the proposed average increase will be about $32 per month for 2020.

It’s important to note that water utilities across the nation have a long-standing policy of charging higher rates for more water use, and Westminster has taken that approach for years. This tiered approach helps keep the base rate low for those most in need while encouraging conservation for those high water users who use the most.

Residential Customer FAQ
