A portion of your utility bill supports funding projects that maintain and improve our water systems for both drinking water and wastewater. These projects include replacing water meters with digital meters, installing new water and sewer mains under the ground, and repairs and updates to our treatment facilities. Below is a list of our active projects. To learn more, click on each project and sign up for their project updates.
The City of Westminster is investing $32 million to repair and replace sections of large sewer pipe throughout the northern portion of Westminster beginning in 2020. Although mostly out of sight, this network of underground pipes is critical to protecting public health and the environment 24/7. The majority of the Big Dry Creek Interceptor Sewer was installed in the 1970s and 1980s. Recent studies have indicated that sections of existing pipe need rehabilitation and additional sections of pipe are required to ensure adequate capacity for current and future wastewater flows.
The Sheridan Water Line Replacement Project addresses concerns of age, condition, and capacity of the current water Line along Sheridan Blvd between 72nd and 80th Avenue. Replacing the pipe will greatly reduce the potential for a watermain break and ensures South Westminster residents along the Sheridan corridor will have better and more reliable water service. We plan to dig up the 1960’s-year-old water main and install a new watermain this year. We know this may cause some potential traffic delays along with construction noise, and we will do all that we can to minimize the inconvenience to your community. When complete, the project will repave parts of Sheridan Boulevard and add fresh striping, supporting a smooth and safe driving experience.
This project is the second phase of a larger vision to modernize the water infrastructure along the Sheridan corridor. In 2016 we completed the first phase of the water line from 80th to 88th Avenue, and we anticipate replacing the water line all the way to 120th Avenue in the future.
We will be replacing two aging water storage tanks near City Hall with replacement water tanks that will provide reliable service decades into the future. Two of the three existing tanks were built in 1968 and need to be replaced due to structural safety concerns. The tank on the far east side of the property was built in 2016 and will remain on site.
The City has made significant progress on the future of water in Westminster. Over the past year, under City Council’s guidance, the City reevaluated options for Westminster’s new water treatment facility to better balance the need for clean, safe, and affordable water.
